I read an interesting article in the newspaper last week…
It was all about how people are getting “addicted” to the Internet.
The explantation of “how” was pretty deep too for a tabloid.
To paraphrase:
Technology is constantly drawing people away from the opportunity to develop our minds in the same way that drugs “short circuit” addicts’ desires for other other pleasures.
The ability to choose among opportunities is what distinguishes us from the animals – but now technology selects what we pay attention to.
The Internet constantly throws stuff at you that is novel, like emails, Facebook updates or new websites.
Some people are checking their smartphones every few minutes…
And many spend more time connected to the Internet than they do asleep.
A British psychologist even labelled the Internet “electronic cocaine”.
If that’s the case, you can call me a dealer!
The press are never happier than when they are up in arms about something or other…
But as Internet Marketers, increased time spent online is only a good thing for our businesses.
In fact, I am delighted if the capacity to be “human” is degraded by the compulsion to get the next online “fix”…
Especially if it’s Internet Marketing that people are addicted to!
