Do you remember Michael Owen?

He was a former “child prodigy” soccer star who burst onto the scene with Liverpool in the late 1990s and scored over 150 goals for the Anfield club. Despite a career blighted by injury, he went on to play for Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Manchester United. He is the only player to have scored in four major tournaments for England and is fourth in the “all time” goal scoring list for his country.

But, at the age of just 32, Owen is without a club and his career is in danger of coming to a premature end.

I’ve always had an interest in Owen and his career…

Mainly because we’d have been in the same “school year” and you always compare yourself to others of the same age.

I remember vividly his goal for England as a precocious 18-year-old during the 1998 World Cup and while Owen was grabbing the world’s media attention by the throat…

I was in Ibiza on a “lads holiday”, getting drunk, turned down by girls and thinking about university.

Owen appeared on a popular soccer show last Sunday morning and like most sports stars who don’t have much to look forward to career wise, he harked back to the “glory days”.

He said as a youngster he played without fear. He knew he was a good player and knew he would score goals. The opposition at that time was irrelevant.

However, as he got older he found himself thinking about his game a lot more and also considering who he would be up against on the playing field.

I can draw comparisons with what Owen said with my own “career” in Internet Marketing.

When I was first trying to make money online in my late teens and early 20s, I didn’t really think about what I was doing or consider the consequences – I just “did it”.

But, time has progressed and these days more rides on my success or failure – a bigger mortgage and financial stability for my young son means I am a lot more cautious.

You may be in that position right now.

You simply cannot afford to dive head-first into the unknown and to hell with the consequences…

But on the flip side you cannot afford to be so cautious that you never do anything either.
