The armchair philosopher in me comes out at this time of year.

Remembrance Sunday was observed across the UK.

I don’t come from a background with a strong military tradition…

But my great grandfather went to France to fight in World War I.

I don’t know much about him. He died years before I was born and my father has only talked about him fleetingly…

Usually accompanied by a tale of epic drinking proportions.

It was in France, you see, where my great grandfather got a taste for pints of white wine.

And so, when the war was over, he returned to the mining village in South Wales and back down the pit he went.

But arguably, he was never the same.

As my father said: “Who knows what he saw out there”.

Health problems took their toll and from the very brief details I know, I suspect what we now refer to as PTSD may have contributed to his demise.

In trying to “make it” online it’s easy to talk casually about the “sacrifices” we make:

A cancelled vacation here…

A sleepless night there.

However, it pales into insignificance compared to what those fallen young men and women sacrificed for their families and for their futures.

I’m grateful my only fight is that to stay out of a 9-5 job…

And make enough money so I can live comfortably.

I’m grateful that my only worry every month is what I should spend my excess cash on to make life that little bit more pleasurable.

And I’m grateful these are the only problems I have.

Given the choice, wouldn’t you rather show up for a battle you know you can win?

Wouldn’t you rather just push a button in some military stronghold and make all your problems go away…

Rather than take your chances in the mud and blood of the trenches?

It’s a phrase I heard often as a child…

If the zombie apocalypse strikes us this Halloween…

The chances are you’ll find out.

Everybody likes to think they’d be “Rick Grimes”, the courageous and cold-hearted-when-required hero of The Walking Dead, whose job it is to keep his family and other group members alive…

I spotted a valuable marketing lesson while watching the movie, Horrible Bosses, a few days ago.

But first, Hollywood has no idea about what a terrible working environment is like…

I mean, presenting a horny, semi-naked Jennifer Aniston demanding sexual favours from you every day as the worst thing that could happen during your 9-5?

Get real.

But anyway…

The movie is about three guys who, sexual harrassment aside, are sick of their bosses expecting them to do the job’s they’re paid for and collude to kill them off to make their working days that much easier.

I know it was a movie… and a “comedy” at that…

But I just didn’t get it.

Why go to all that trouble and risk life imprisonment (or worse) for a job you don’t really like in the first place?

Why not just take the easy option…

Namely, quitting your job and finding another?

The Internet Marketing industry is full of people who don’t take the “easy” option either.

If you want to make money online, the easiest thing to do is to SELL something:

A product, a service, or whatever.

But no.

For a variety of reasons (FEAR being the main one), some people will do whatever they can to avoid having to sell anything online…

And delude themselves thinking that a “business” is somehow going to manifest itself from writing a blog or creating silly graphics to submit to Pinterest.

The easiest, most direct route to making a sale is just outright asking for one…

Rather than trying to do things sneakily and anonymously “under the radar”.

Look, I know “sales” is a scary word but since I focused on making them and indeed asking for larger amounts of money each time…

A “strange” thing happened:

I made MORE sales and MORE money.

Straight up.

It’s not often I talk politics, let alone US politics seeing as I am from the UK, but it was hard to ignore the latest Internet sensation borne from the second presidential debate.

I am, of course, talking about Mitt Romney’s “binders full of women” comment.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, the gist of it is this:

As state governor in 2003, Mitt wanted to know why all the applicants to fill his cabinet were men. He was told the men were the qualified applicants and he asked whether women who were also qualified could be found.

No problems so far.

However, the controversy happened when Mitt approached women’s groups in an attempt to find suitable applicants and he described their response as providing “whole binders full of women”.

There have been outcries of Romney “objectifying” and “dehumanizing” women with the comment but regardless of whether his choice of phrase was right or not, what I got from it was this:

Suitable applicants, men AND women, ARE out there if you make the effort to look.

And, as far as the “binders” comment goes – personally, I don’t see the big deal.

The whole Internet Marketing industry is based on the “binders” model.

But instead of “binders”, we call them…

LISTS.

As marketers, it’s our job to seek out, segment and categorise our applicants (subscribers) into binders (lists).

Instead of interviewing them, we market to them.

How they respond determines which binder they go into next…

Keeping things really simple, those who don’t buy anything stay in the prospects binder while those who do, go into one specifically for buyers.

I like to get as many applicants out of the prospects binder and into my buyers binder as quickly as possible…

And where the REAL money is?

Moving qualified buyers into a special “higher level” binder where they become clients.

My plan of attack paid off!

Over the past couple of months I’ve been working in the background and laying the foundations for a six figure monthly business.

It’s no wonder half of all small businesses fail in their first five years if they allow this crap to invade their ear-holes and waste precious time doing things that simply do not work.

It’s been four weeks since my last post.

I’ve been really busy with my 4-week coaching program followed by interviewing candidates for my “high level” coaching thereafter.

Interviewing has been an incredible education and has enabled me to learn so much about EXACTLY who a typical “wannabe Internet Marketer” is.

And just like the weather forecast here in South Wales…

The outlook is not so great.

Here’s why:

Almost every applicant described themselves as an “action taker” or somebody willing to do “whatever it takes” to succeed…

BULL SHIT!

Some were true to their word and I look forward to helping them get to where they want to be, but others, let’s call them the “bull shit contingent”, ran a mile when offered a REAL life-changing opportunity.

Out came all manner of excuses about why they couldn’t take their place on a coaching program THEY applied to join in the first place!

Or even worse…

Some agreed to join only for a coincidental “disaster” to strike merely hours after they committed themselves to changing theirs and their family’s lives for the better.

A pet dog’s emergency leg transplant or some other bull shit now meant they could no longer be coached.

The sad truth is there is nothing wrong with Fido’s leg…

And it’s not even about the cost of investment either.

The real problem?

A good percentage of “wannabe” marketers or those who consider themselves marketers struggling with their marketing simply do not want to succeed…

The thought terrifies them.

These people are happier in the “cosier” areas of the Internet Marketing industry:

Writing a load of bull shit about how they “want” to succeed on a non-profitable blog day after day…

Or “networking” in Facebook groups which amounts to no more than bull shitting about future success with other bull shitters.

It’s where those on the fringes of the industry feel “safe”.

Because they never have to step out of their comfort zone and do any real marketing!

Check that…

They never have to do ANYTHING at all!

Unfortunately, their demise is no longer my business the moment we part ways…

And it pains me to say that because as somebody who has struggled myself to succeed online over the years, I want to pluck as many individuals as I possibly can from marketing obscurity and help them.

Week Two of my live coaching program starts later today!

The bottom 99% waits for their ship to come in. The 1% builds their own ship.

Growing up, I remember my father talking specifically about waiting for his “ship to come in”…

He’s now 70 years old and guess what?

He’s still waiting… and probably always will be.

The truth is, building your own ship will be a faster, even easier route to wealth than sitting around waiting and hoping for one to arrive.
